Indian Economy’s Moderation Amidst US Tariffs

• Retail inflation in India has slightly increased after falling to 1.61 per cent in July.

• Inflation averaged 1.84 per cent in the second quarter (July-August), below the central bank’s projection of 2.1%.

• Moderation is largely due to falling food prices, with sharpest falls in August observed in vegetables and pulses.

• Core inflation, excluding volatile food and fuel components, remains range bound.

• Inflation remained muted in most categories, except for personal care and effects, where it was 16.61 per cent.

• The rationalisation and lowering of GST rates, effective from September 22, could have a calming influence.

• Economists at SBI estimate that tax cuts will lead to inflation moderating in the range of 65-75 basis points over FY26-27.

• This calls for a recalibration of inflation forecasts, with some projects indicating lower levels.

• The effects of US tariffs imposed by President Trump will become evident in the weeks and months ahead.
