Indian Environment Ministry Exempts 39 Industrial Categories from Dual Eco-Clearance
• The Union Environment Ministry has removed the requirement of environmental clearance and consent to establish for 39 industries.
• These industries include manufacturing solar cells and modules, wind and hydel power units, fly ash bricks or block manufacturing, leather cutting and stitching, and air-coolers and air-conditioners.
• The move aims to reduce the “compliance burden” of industries and prevent duplication of approvals.
• The move follows amendments to the Water Act earlier this year, which gave the Centre greater authority to override the State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) in some instances.
• The amendments also formalize an existing practice where “white category” industries were given permits by the State departments responsible for industry.
