India’s Diplomatic Relations with Afghanistan Restored

• India has restored diplomatic links with Afghanistan by upgrading the Technical Mission in Kabul into an embassy.

• The Taliban administration in Afghanistan, led by Suhail Shaheen, welcomed the move, stating it would aid in building “regional peace.”

• The move coincided with Qatar’s introduction of its Ambassador and special representative in its embassy in Kabul.

• The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced the restoration of formal diplomatic contact with Taliban-administered Afghanistan.

• India’s embassy in Kabul was closed in August 2021 due to the Taliban’s overthrow of President Ashraf Ghani’s government.

• India sent a technical team to Kabul in June 2022 to facilitate humanitarian assistance and provide consular support.
