India’s mission in Kabul to be upgraded to an embassy

• India will upgrade its technical mission in Kabul to an embassy, announced External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

• The announcement was made during a meeting with Amir Khan Muttaqi, Foreign Minister of the Taliban administration.

• Jaishankar expressed concerns about the forced repatriation of Afghan refugees by Pakistan and termed “cross-border terrorism” a mutual challenge for India and Afghanistan.

• He emphasized India’s commitment to Afghanistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence, stating that closer cooperation would aid national development and regional stability.

• The upgrade follows the closure of the Indian embassy in Kabul in 2021 after the withdrawal of U.S. forces.

• Amir Khan Muttaqi welcomed the decision, mentioning that the Taliban may not send an ambassador initially.
