India’s Potential as a Tea Superpower

• James Suranga Perera, Executive Director of the International Tea Committee, believes India has the potential to become a superpower in the tea industry.

• India is the second-largest producer and consumer of tea and the third-largest exporter of tea.

• In 2024, India produced 1.303 billion kg of tea and consumed 1.22 billion kg.

• Despite being the largest exporter, India exports 255 million kg worth almost $800 million.

• Perera suggests India should focus on quality for better realisation and exploration of new markets like South America and Africa.

• Indian consumers are willing to pay more for quality, with a per capita consumption of 840 gm a year.
