India’s Role in Kashmir and Jammu Assembly Elections
• The INDIA bloc, comprising the National Conference (NC), Congress, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), won the majority of seats in Kashmir and some reserved seats in Jammu.
• The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) retained its dominance in Jammu’s Hindu-majority seats but fell short in Kashmir.
• Other Kashmir-based parties like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) did not fare as well.
• The INDIA bloc secured a vote share of 37% across the Union Territory, 11 points ahead of the BJP’s 26% and significantly ahead of the PDP’s 9%.
• The BJP won 54.3% of the vote in districts with a high Hindu population, while in districts with a high Muslim population, the BJP’s tally was a mere 4.1%.
• The alliance between the NC, the Congress, and the CPI(M) led to the bloc winning 83% of the seats in Kashmir, compared to 37% in 2014.
• The BJP retained its seat share in Jammu due to its steady performance.
• In the nine Scheduled Tribe reserved seats, the INDIA bloc secured a vote share of 37.1% compared to the BJP’s 23.6% and managed seven seats.
