India’s Solar Power Industry Growth and Challenges

• India has developed a domestic solar power industry, with the per unit cost of solar power falling below coal power in 2017.

• In 2024-25, India generated 1,08,494 Gwh of solar energy, surpassing Japan’s 96,459 Gwh.

• India’s manufacturing capacity for solar module panels increased from 2 GW in 2014 to 100 GW in 2025.

• India aims to source half of its power requirements in 2030 from non-fossil fuel sources, with 250 GW-280 GW expected to come from solar power.

• India’s solar module production is 1.5 to 2 times more expensive than those from China due to its larger capacity, control of raw materials, and superior production lines.

• India managed about 4 GW of solar module export to the U.S. in 2024, compared to China’s annual export of around 236 GW in 2024.

• India’s overtures to be a’solar supplier’ to Africa, leveraging the International Solar Alliance, could help tap into Africa’s limited rural power.
