• In 2019, Tamil Nadu recorded 8.3 lakh dog bites, compared to the estimated dog population of 4.4 lakh in 2019.

• Manipur reported around 5,500 dog bite cases in 2019, while Odisha reported only 1.7 lakh bites.

• States like Tamil Nadu could learn from Odisha, which reported only about 100 bites per 1,000 dogs.

• The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 99% of human rabies cases are caused by the bite of infected dogs.

• India’s National Action Plan for Dog-Mediated Rabies Elimination by 2030 proposed strategic mass dog vaccination as a solution.

• A data-driven rabies elimination program in Goa showed that vaccinating 70% of the state’s dogs eliminated human rabies cases by 2019 and reduced monthly canine rabies cases by 92%.
