ISRO Conducts First Integrated Air Drop Test for Gaganyaan Mission

• Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully conducted its first Integrated Air Drop Test (IADT-1) for the Gaganyaan mission.

• The test aimed to ensure the parachute system designed for the Gaganyaan crew module performs reliably in real-world conditions.

• A dummy crew capsule weighing around 5 tonnes was dropped by a helicopter to test the parachute-based deceleration system.

• The test involved the opening of main parachutes in a specific sequence to decelerate the capsule to a safe splashdown speed.

• The ascent, descent, and post-splashdown phases of the Gaganyaan mission are expected to be the most risky for astronauts.

• The effort involved multiple national agencies, including the Air Force, Defence Research and Development Organisation, Navy, and Coast Guard.

• Major preparatory work for Gaganyaan has been completed, including the development and testing of propulsion systems, environmental control and life support system engineering model, and the crew escape system.
