Jaishankar will attend Trump’s January 20 swearing-in ceremony in Washington D.C.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has been invited to represent the Government
of India at the swearing-in ceremony of the U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on
January 20. Mr. Trump has invited several heads of government and heads of state to
be present at the event and the subsequent celebrations that are to be held in
Washington D.C.
“On the invitation of the Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee, External Affairs Minister
(EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar will represent the Government of India at the Swearing-in
Ceremony of President-elect Donald J. Trump as the 47th President of the United
States of America,” announced the Ministry of External Affairs on Sunday.
Mr. Jaishankar visited the U.S. from December 24-29, when he met with officials from
the Biden administration and also met with Congressman Michael Waltz, who has
been chosen by Mr. Trump to be his next National Security Adviser.
The swearing-in ceremony of the second Trump administration has been of much
global interest since it came to light that Chinese President Xi Jinping was invited in the
event. Since winning the presidential election, Mr. Trump has met several global
leaders like President Macron of France and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine
among others and there were speculations about a possible invite for Prime Minister
Narendra Modi for his swearing-in ceremony.
However, sources have clarified to The Hindu that External Affairs Minister Mr.
Jaishankar was invited by name
