Jal Shakti Minister and West Bengal Chief Minister disagree over reservoir water release

• Union Minister C.R. Patil refuted West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s claims regarding water release by the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC).

• Patil stated that only 70,000 cusecs of water was released from the reservoirs, contrary to Banerjee’s assertion of 150,000 cusecs.

• He cited the Damodar Valley Reservoir Regulation Committee (DVRRC) for the accurate figure and emphasized a systematic approach to reservoir management.

• Banerjee accused the DVC of a “deliberate ploy” to inflict hardship during the festival season and protested against the water release.

• The Union Minister mentioned that comments were sought from the West Bengal Irrigation and Waterways Directorate before the water release, but no input was received.

• Patil assured that the water levels in the Lower Damodar area were normal and below warning levels.

• In response, West Bengal Minister Manas Ranjan Bhuniya claimed the cumulative release since October 2 exceeded 150,000 cusecs and criticized the Centre for neglecting state needs.
