Juvenile violence has escalated in India.
• British mini-series “Adolescence” explores the rise of violent crimes by juveniles globally, including in India.
• Violent crimes include sexual offences, physical violence, arson, dacoity, and robbery.
• In the UK, the share of youth apprehended for violent crimes increased from 50% to 57% among juveniles.
• In India, the share of juveniles apprehended for violent offences steadily increased from 32.5% in 2016 to 49.5% in 2022.
• Madhya Pradesh accounted for 21.8% of all violent crimes between 2017 and 2022, followed by Maharashtra with 18%.
• Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Tamil Nadu ranked third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.
• Delhi accounted for 6.8% of all violent crimes committed by juveniles in India.
• Jharkhand had the highest share of violent crimes in the 2017 to 2022 period, with over 60% of juvenile offences classified as violent in Tripura, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh.
