Karnataka State Commission to Mask 33 Christian Subcastes in Socio-Educational Survey

• Controversy over the inclusion of new castes in the Christian subcaste category has led to a change in the caste list.

• The Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes will mask 33 Christian subcastes in the mobile application for the socio-educational survey.

• The survey will commence across Karnataka on Monday, except for the Greater Bengaluru Authority area.

• Over two lakh teachers will be involved in the survey, with enumerators visiting households with 60 questions.

• The commission’s member-secretary, K.A. Dayanand, stated that the inclusion of Christian sub-castes on the caste list created controversy.

• The official list now includes 887 Backward Classes, 101 Scheduled Castes, and 50 Scheduled Tribes.

• The Backward Classes Commission chairman, Madhusudan Naik, stated that the religion column has no value in the enumeration, as religion does not fall under the purview of the panel.
