Kaziranga contains orchids for the one-horned rhino.
• The UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, hosts at least 70 species of orchids across 36 genera.
• The 79 species, 46 epiphytes and 24 terrestrial, were documented during a rapid survey in the 1,302-sq.km protected area.
• The majority of these orchids (39 species) were recorded from the Panbari Reserve Forest within the tiger reserve.
• Terrestrial orchids like Euphoria dabia, Zeuxine lindleyana, and Nevarilia Juliana were found along riverbanks in grasslands.
• Rare species include Birmannia bimaculata, Eulophia kamarupa, and Zeuxine lindleyana.
• The orchid survey was preceded by a conservation outreach program to familiarize local students with the orchid and butterfly diversity in the Kaziranga landscape.
• The discovery has added a new layer to Kaziranga’s iconic wildlife.
