Kirigami parachutes hit their goal

• Conventional parachutes are costly, fragile, complex to assemble, and prone to lateral drift, resulting in inaccurate targeting for drops in disaster zones.

• Researchers from Polytechnique Montreal and the Institut Polytechnique de Paris explored using kirigami, a Japanese cutting art, to design new parachutes from single Mylar discs.

• The study aimed to create a stable parachute that could be manufactured with simple laser cuts, enhancing aerodynamics and improving reliability in landing.

• Experiments showed that discs with specific kirigami patterns could achieve stable, nearly vertical descent and minimize lateral drift, unlike traditional designs.

• The final tests confirmed that a one-meter kirigami parachute effectively delivered a water bottle from a drone, demonstrating its potential for humanitarian aid.

• This new method simplifies manufacturing and could also be useful in drone logistics, space payload returns, and environmental sensing, where weight and simplicity are critical.

• Future research may enhance performance through membrane coverings over cuts and innovative cut patterns to control descent paths.
