    • The National Context surrounding the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019 has shifted focus to Ladakh, a region once a Union Territory.

    • Protests have led to violence and arson, with at least four deaths and 50 injuries in Leh.

    • The Centre should listen to the protesters and address their concerns.

    • The promise made in 2019 was to protect Ladakh’s cultural, ecological, and linguistic heritage.

    • The Centre’s notifications in June this year, including domicile-based requirements for government jobs and recognition of local languages, were steps in the right direction.

    • More needs to be done, including implementing the devolution of powers to Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils (LADHCs), addressing land ownership and large-scale energy projects, and addressing the cries for statehood.

    • The protests have been supported by various political and social groups, including the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic alliance.

    • The government has the capacity to address the protests and ensure they do not derail the larger process of talks and negotiation.

    • Ladakh, bordering Pakistan and China, is one of India’s most important frontiers, and its people have stood steadfastly by the country in war and peace.

    • The protesters’ demands are within the Constitutional framework, and New Delhi and Leh need to work together to address the situation.

Ladakh statehood demand is important topic for Civil service exam (WBCS).
