Ladakh shuts down after police detain protesters marching to Delhi.
• Ladakh’s MP, Mohmad Haneefa, was detained by the Delhi Police on Tuesday, following over a hundred protesters, including climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, detained at the Delhi-Haryana border.
• Wangchuk and others in detention began an indefinite hunger strike in Delhi, causing the entire region to shut down in protest.
• Cherring Dorjay Lakruk, co-convener of the Leh Apex Body (LAB), expressed shock at the treatment of peaceful protesters, including 80-year-olds, who had been walking since September 1.
• Lakruk urged the Union Home Ministry to resume dialogue with the high-powered committee set up in 2023 to address their grievances.
• The Congress backed the protests, with Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi stating the detention of Ladakhis was unacceptable.
• The LAB and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) have been demanding Statehood for Ladakh since 2020, job reservations for locals, and better electoral representation.
