Light-Based Computing: A Potential Solution for Faster AI

• Researchers from Tampere University and Université Marie et Louis Pasteur discovered that light in optical fibres can perform complex AI tasks faster and more efficiently than traditional computers.

• Light-based computing uses photons, particles of light, rather than electrons, making it faster, more bandwidth-efficient, and energy-efficient.

• The study opens doors to new types of AI hardware that can be used in areas where speed and efficiency are critical.

AI Model: Image to Numbers and Back

• Researchers used an extreme learning machine (ELM) to understand the accuracy of image recognition using light properties in optical fibres.

• The ELM was more than 91% accurate at recognising handwritten digits using the optical fibre’s anomalous dispersion regime and more than 93% accuracy in the normal dispersion regime.

• The study highlights the opportunities within light-based computing with optical fibres to meet the growing demand for faster and smarter AI.
