Look Beyond Family: The Scale of Dynastic Politics in India’s Political Parties

• Dynastic leaders are prevalent in nearly all major political parties in India, with 149 families having more than one dynast-legislator.

• Congress, despite its diminished state, has 857 legislators, with 33.2% of them being dynasts.

• The BJP has almost twice the number of legislators but its share of dynasts is 18.6%, just above half that of Congress.

• Major regional parties, including SP, RJD, JD(U), DMK, and TDP, are dominated by families in both party and government.

• The epidemic of political fiefdoms is a warning and a symptom, requiring reform for the long-term future of political parties.

• The churn in Indian democracy has led to the expansion of the polity to give political voice to marginalised groups.

• The question is not just about the number of “dynasts” in a party but also the internal structures that enable mobility and where on the social ladder its leaders are.

• The Left and BJP, which are ideological and cadre-based, have built in structures that allow for the creation of a broader, more empowered leadership pool.

• Over half of India’s population is under 30, and political parties need to open their doors and set a higher bar for relatives.

• Without such reform, parties will fail to attract talent and may wither away.
