Maharashtra’s Kunbi Caste Certificates Demand

• Quota activist Manoj Jarange-Patil demands the Maharashtra government to implement the government resolution (GR) issued on September 2 and distribute Kunbi caste certificates to eligible members of the Maratha community before September 17, observed as Marathwada Liberation Day.

• Jarange-Patil warns against the 1994 GR that granted reservation to the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) based on the Mandal Commission report.

• The demand comes amid talks by OBC leaders, including NCP Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, who opposes extending quota to Marathas under the OBC category.

• Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule clarifies that certificates will be issued after following the due process, including submitting applications with required documents.

• Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar calls the GR “dangerous” and “unfair” to OBC communities and urges Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the issue.
