Modi, Yunus reconcile over border, minorities
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus Hold First Meeting
• Modi and Yunus held talks on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC regional summit in Bangkok.
• They discussed contentious issues such as India’s call for Bangladesh’s protection of minorities, Dhaka’s demand for former PM Sheikh Hasina’s extradition, and border security.
• The meeting ended on cordial terms and commitments to bilateral ties.
• Bangladesh will host the BIMSTEC summit next year.
• Modi also met with Myanmar junta commander Min Aung Hlaing and Nepal PM K.P. Sharma Oli.
• Modi expressed India’s support for a “democratic, stable, peaceful, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh” and urged avoidance of rhetoric that vitiates the environment.
