Naga tribes plan to re-engage in protest against the state’s job reservation policy on July 9.
Naga Tribes’ Agitation Against Nagaland’s Reservation Policy
• Five major Naga tribes, Angami, Ao, Lotha, Rengma, and Sumi, relaunch their agitation against Nagaland’s reservation policy from July 9.
• The committee argues that the quota system for 11 “backward” Naga tribes, in place since 1977, doesn’t reflect the region’s socioeconomic and educational landscape.
• The protest will last for a day, with further steps pending government response.
• The government failed to initiate a review in 1987, instead stating the reservation would continue until further notice.
• The committee served a 30-day ultimatum to the government on April 26, and a commission was assured to be set up by June 17.
• Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio criticized the proposed commission’s detailed task and suggested significant administrative reforms should be post-national Census exercise.
