National Highway-2 Reopening in Manipur Restrictions

• The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) has rescinded an agreement with the Union Home Ministry for the reopening of National Highway-2.

• The KZC will not declare the reopening until a settlement is reached between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities.

• The conflict between the two communities, which erupted in May 2023, led to the highway’s shutdown.

• The KZC has requested the people of Kangpokpi to cooperate with security forces in maintaining the safety of commuters along NH-02.

• The KZC has urged the Meitei public to act responsibly and respect the buffer zone.

• The highway, which connects the Imphal Valley in Manipur to Dimapur in Nagaland and further to Assam via the hill district of Kangpokpi, is crucial for bringing essential supplies to the landlocked Imphal Valley and accessing the airport in Imphal.

• The KZC’s visit to Manipur is seen as a symbolic visit to the Kukis, indicating that their party in the State is responsible for the crisis.
