National Sports Governance Bill: A Comprehensive Reform

• Passed by both houses of Parliament and cleared in Rajya Sabha.

• Key features include:

– Age and tenure cap: Fixed at three consecutive terms for President, Secretary-General, and Treasurer posts.

– Executive Committee strength: Capped at 15 to minimize financial burden.

– National Sports Board: Overriding powers to grant or suspend recognition to National Sports Federations.

– National Sports Tribunal: Has civil court powers and can be removed for violations.

– National Sports Election Panel: Comprises retired members of the Election Commission of India, State Election Commission, Chief Electoral Officers of States or Deputy Election Commissioners.

– Right to Information Act, 2005: Covers all recognized sports organizations dependent on government funding.

– Government’s discretionary powers: Sports organizations using the word “India”, “Indian”, “National”, or any National insignia must obtain a No Objection Certificate.
