NCTE Reviewing Teacher Training Regulations
• The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) is reviewing draft regulations for teacher training programs.
• The review follows calls for broader consultation and reflection on the proposed overhaul.
• The draft regulations align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and outline the process for recognizing institutions for teacher education programs.
• The NCTE received up to 6,774 responses between February 20 and March 8, last year.
• The NCTE approved the NCTE (Recognition Norms and Procedure) Regulations, 2025, after accepting the expert committee’s recommendations.
• The regulations are not finalized yet, and will be notified in a gazette after approval from the Ministry of Education and legal vetting from the Ministry of Law.
• The draft regulations do not offer flexibility in teacher deployment within broad primary and middle/secondary stages, as per Padma Sarangapani, a former NCTE member.
• An expert committee has been formed to examine the demand-supply gap of school teachers in the country.
