Nepal Bans 26 Social Media Platforms
• K.P. Sharma Oli’s government bans 26 social media platforms including Facebook, X, Instagram, and YouTube due to non-compliance with registration rules.
• The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology ordered the Nepal Telecommunication Authority to inactivate all non-registered sites until they are registered.
• The government set a seven-day deadline for social media platforms to register in Nepal, which expired on Wednesday night.
• Free speech advocates argue the move is less about regulation and more about silencing dissent.
• The government’s decision is based on a recent Supreme Court ruling and its own Directives Relating to the Regulation for Usage of Social Media.
• This is not the first time Nepal has banned a social media platform, with TikTok blocked for nine months in November 2023.
