No reciprocal U.S. tariffs on India, says Centre.
• India and the U.S. plan to increase market access, reduce import duty and non-tariff barriers, and enhance supply chain integration in the proposed bilateral trade agreement.
• The U.S. has not applied reciprocal tariffs on India as of this date.
• The U.S. issued the Memorandum on Reciprocal Trade and Tariffs on February 13, requiring the Secretary of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative to investigate harm to America from non-reciprocal trade agreements.
• India’s simple average tariff rate for agriculture is 39%, and for industrial goods is 13.5%.
• Post Union Budget 2025-26, the simple average industrial tariff has reduced to 10.66%.
• Top 10 commodities of India’s export to the U.S. in 2023-24 include drug formulations, biologicals, pearls, precious stones, petroleum products, telecom instruments, gold and other precious metal jewellery, iron and steel products, ready-made garments of cotton, electronic components, cotton fabrics, made-ups etc., and marine products.
