Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to David Baker, Demis Hassabis, and John Jumper
• David Baker won the 2024 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for computational protein design.
• Hassabis and Jumper received the award for protein structure prediction.
• Baker led a team that designed a new protein using bespoke software methods in 2003.
• Their work has led to the creation of ‘designer’ proteins for specific applications.
• Hassabis and Jumper developed an artificial intelligence model called AlphaFold 2 to predict the structures of millions of proteins.
• The Nobel Prize for Hassabis and Jumper comes relatively quickly after the corresponding work, around four to six years.
• This year’s chemistry prize also goes to non-chemists, a new tradition in the category.
