• President Droupadi Murmu appoints Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai as the next Chief Justice of India.

• Gavai will take office on May 14, following the demise of incumbent Justice Sanjiv Khanna.

• Gavai is the 52nd Chief Justice of India and is the senior-most Supreme Court judge.
