Organ donation hampered by deficiencies in brain death certification

• A significant number of brain deaths in ICUs are not officially certified, which leads to lost opportunities for organ donation.

• A national survey highlighted that fewer than 50% of physicians involved in organ donations received formal training in brain death certification during medical school.

• Only 10% of doctors reported routinely training residents in brain death certification, indicating a critical gap in the organ donation program in India.

• The survey, published in “Neurology India,” found that while 96% of the 177 surveyed doctors were aware of the apnea test, nearly half did not screen for drugs or toxins, an essential procedure in eliminating reversible causes of coma.

• India experiences approximately 160,000 road traffic deaths annually, but only 1,000 to 1,200 deceased organ donations occur each year; inadequate trained personnel is a significant barrier to increasing donations.

• Experts emphasize that despite increased awareness, practical learning regarding brain death certification has not improved significantly.
