Organ Transplantation: A Call for Justice and Equality

• The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) has proposed a gender-based priority for women patients and relatives of deceased donors awaiting transplants.

• This move aims to address the gender imbalance among organ transplant recipients and make provisions for additional points in the allocation criteria for women patients in the waiting.

• However, the current organ allotment protocols do not allow for prioritising any one recipient over another, except on grounds of health.

• Questions have been raised about the definition of ‘near relatives’ and if all families involved in donating cadaveric organs since 1995 would be considered beneficiaries.

• Implementers fear this could facilitate out-of-turn allotments, especially as organ harvesting rackets continue to be busted in India.

• The principle of not denying anyone whose need for an organ is the greatest, based on health parameters, should always be adhered to.
