Patient Perceptions Drive Frivolous Antibiotic Use in India

• Antimicrobial resistance is a major global health threat, causing around 5 million deaths annually.

• Overuse of antibiotics, especially for conditions that don’t benefit them, is a major driver.

• India issues over half a billion antibiotic prescriptions annually in the private sector.

• Studies show about 70% of cases of childhood diarrhoea are treated with antibiotics, despite most cases being viral and should be treated with ORS and zinc.

• A study in Science Advances found that even among those who knew antibiotics were unnecessary, 62% still prescribed them.

• The main driver was providers’ belief that patients wanted antibiotics, with a preference for ORS leading to a sharp decrease in antibiotic use.

• The study suggests that simply educating providers may not be enough to curb antibiotic misuse.

• The mismatch between perception and reality fuels the “know-do gap.”
