Peter Navarro’s Provocative Attacks on India

• US Trade Advisor Peter Navarro has escalated his offensive against India over its purchase of Russian oil, defending the 50% tariff the US has imposed on Indian goods.

• Navarro referred to the Kremlin as an “oil money laundromat,” stating that “Brahmins are profiteering at the expense of the Indian people… we want that to stop.”

• These remarks are seen as a rash abandonment of the circumspection called for in high diplomacy, which must leave spaces open for manoeuvre.

• India’s prioritization of economic and strategic goals amid global turbulence is a concern, as is the US pressure over Russian oil imports.

• The complications that currently cast a shadow over India-US trade ties cannot be dismissed or addressed by name-calling.

• The India-US relationship is too consequential for both countries, and reckless words should not derail it.

• The Trump administration also recognizes India-US ties as a “defining relationship of the 21st century,” with Secretary of State Marco Rubio stating that “the enduring friendship” between India and the US can help realize the “tremendous potential of our economic relationship.”
