Poorly funded pregnancy program:  Sonia

• The NFSA, passed in 2013 by the Manmohan Singh government, was the foundation for the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana.
• The Act includes a maternity entitlement of ₹6,000 a child for pregnant women in the informal sector.
• The Narendra Modi-led government has been accused of several lapses in implementing this provision.
• The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) was launched in 2017, but only provides ₹5,000 for the first child.
• A 2022-23 analysis showed a drastic decrease in the proportion of pregnant women receiving PMMVY, from 68% to 12%.
• The scheme is “severely underfunded”, requiring an annual budget of ₹12,000 crore.
