Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin Meet in Tianjin

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Tianjin, reaffirming their support for strengthening the “special and privileged strategic partnership” between the two countries.

• The leaders discussed ways to deepen bilateral cooperation in all sectors and exchanged views on regional and global developments, including the peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine.

• Putin hailed Moscow’s ties with New Delhi as special, friendly, and trusting.

• On Ukraine, Putin emphasized the need to address the eastward expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) for sustainable peace in the region.

• Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged Modi to “deliver an appropriate signal” to Russia.

• The meeting came against the backdrop of the U.S.’s 25% penalty on Indian goods imposed on Indian goods and 25% tariffs over India’s oil trade with Russia.
