Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Participate in ASEAN Summit Virtually

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not travel to Malaysia to attend the 47th ASEAN summit on October 26, but will participate virtually.

• The annual ASEAN summit, a 10-nation grouping, will be held from October 26 to 28 in Kuala Lumpur.

• The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has not provided a reason for Modi’s decision, but Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim cited the “ongoing Deepavali celebrations” as the reason.

• External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will represent Modi and lead the Indian delegation at the summit on October 27.

• The summit is expected to draw dignitaries, including U.S. President Donald Trump, due to the uneasy India-U.S. relations following the U.S. imposed punitive tariff on India due to its purchase of Russian crude oil.

• Officials have previously given mixed signals about Modi’s travel plans for Kuala Lumpur, citing the Bihar election campaign and the ongoing U.S.-Pakistan conflict.
