Protests in Nepal Over Social Media Ban

• At least 19 people were killed and over 400 injured in Nepal on Monday due to widespread protests against a social media ban imposed by the K.P. Sharma Oli government.

• Protests were led by Nepal’s tech-savvy “Gen Z” generation against “corruption, nepotism, and misgovernance” of the Oli government.

• The government cited failure to comply with Nepal’s mandatory registration requirements to ban over two dozen platforms, including X, Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.

• Free speech advocates alleged the ban was an attempt to silence dissent.

• Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned on Monday after the police action drew flak.
