    • Congress Rajya Sabha member Jairam Ramesh warns of a “devastating” effect of the proposed amendment to the Right to Information Act, 2005 on transparency law.

    • Ramesh urges the amendment to be “paused, reviewed, and repealed.”

    • The amendment aims to prevent “misuse” of the law, with information required to be disclosed remaining accessible.

    • Ramesh also points out that the issue has been influenced by civil society, academics, and political parties.

    • 130 Opposition MPs have signed a letter demanding a reversal of the amendment.

    • Digital advocacy groups and transparency groups, including the National Campaign for People’s Right to Information, have also raised alarm since 2023.
