Retake Headquarters of Myanmar Rebels After 30 Years
• Karen National Union (KNU) fighters have seized Manerplaw, a headquarters of the KNU, after 30 years of forced expulsion.
• Manerplaw was the base of the KNU’s armed struggle for rights for the Karen minority.
• The junta and a Buddhist faction captured the base in 1995, leading to thousands fleeing into Thailand.
• The junta renamed the area Kayin State and allied with the Democratic Kayin Buddhist Organization.
• Manerplaw was a historical site for the Karen, with around 100 of its soldiers buried there.
