Russia and Belarus Hold Joint Military Drills

• Russia and Belarus initiated joint military drills, escalating tensions with NATO.

• The exercises, known as the ‘Zapad’, are being held in the Ukraine front line and escalate aerial attacks on Ukrainian cities.

• The Russian Defence Ministry posted a video showing heavy military equipment participating in the drills.

• Russia has deployed ships from its Northern Fleet in the Barents Sea and the Arctic Ocean for the exercises.

• NATO’s eastern flank members, including Poland and Lithuania, are on high alert over the drills.

• Poland closed its border with Belarus overnight until further notice.

• Poland, holding joint drills with NATO allies, announced it would have around 40,000 troops at the border during the exercises.

• Moscow downplayed Poland’s claim that the drills were an “aggressive” show of force.
