SC informs Centre of Jharkhand’s contempt plea
• Chandrachud informed Venkataramani about a contempt petition filed by the Hemant Soren government in Jharkhand against the Union government’s delay in appointing a Chief Justice to the State’s High Court.
• The petition is due for hearing on Friday.
• The Supreme Court Collegium recommended the transfer of Justice M.S. Ramachandra Rao as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court on July 11.
• The transfer was proposed by the Collegium to be cleared by July 19, the retirement date of then-incumbent Jharkhand High Court Chief Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi.
• Jharkhand argues that a Chief Justice of a State High Court is the head of the judiciary and essential for effective judicial and administrative work.
