SC requests response to non-believer’s plea
• Kerala-based woman, Shafiya PM, a non-believer, has urged the Centre to follow the secular status of the Indian Succession Act of 1925.
• The petition, filed by Shafiya PM, argues that the fundamental right to religion under Article 25 of the Constitution includes both the right to believe and not to believe.
• The Supreme Court emphasized the “fundamental postulate of secularism”, which treats all religions equally and allows individuals the fullest liberty to believe or not to believe.
• The petition argues that a person who leaves her faith should not incur any disability or disqualification in matters of inheritance or other civil rights.
