Sleeper Bus Safety Concerns

• A bus accident in Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh, claimed 20 lives, including the bike rider, after a fuel leak.

• Similar incidents occurred in Jaisalmer, where an air-conditioned bus with 57 passengers caught fire.

• Most buses carry names of well-known brands, but only the engine and chassis are purchased from these OEMs.

• Body installation and modifications at body shops are not rigorous, often made of poor quality composite material and lack crash testing.

• Sleeper arrangements restrict passenger movement, and soft, inflammable materials are used for curtains and barricades.

• Current regulations require four exits on sleeper buses, but these do not apply to the existing fleet.

• Drivers are often not trained to handle emergencies, and emergency exit arrangements are often not explained to passengers.

• Current standards mandate fire detection and safety systems, but these are seldom followed at body shops.

• A more comprehensive AIS is needed, followed by strict implementation and regular monitoring.
