Starmer heads 100-member U.K. group to India

• U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is visiting India for two days, starting Wednesday, with a delegation of over 100 members.

• The delegation includes CEOs and representatives from various British institutes, universities, and industry groups.

• This visit follows a trade deal signed between India and the U.K. during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the U.K. in July.

• The focus will be on trade and business, along with bilateral discussions on regional and global issues.

• Key members of the U.K. delegation include Minister for Trade and Business Peter Kyle and Investment Minister Jason Stockwood.

• Starmer and Modi will speak at the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai and assess the evolving India-U.K. relationship framed by ‘Vision 2035.’

• A Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) was signed during Modi’s visit, but it is still undergoing legislative processes in the U.K. and may not be operational until early 2026.

• Karan Billimoria, a House of Lords member, asserts that the visit reflects a genuine commitment to increase bilateral trade, projecting a doubling of trade in five years.

• Current bilateral trade is valued at £44.1 billion ($59.14 billion), with the trade deal expected to contribute an incremental 0.13% to the U.K.’s GDP.

• The delegation includes various organizations like the U.K. India Business Council, major banks, and notable figures such as Sunil Mittal and Anil Agarwal.
