Study on Grassland Invaders in Assam’s Dibru-Saikhowa National Park

• A study identifies two native plants and invasive species altering the riverine ecosystem of eastern Assam’s Dibru-Saikhowa National Park (DSNP), home to feral horses.

• The changes are largely due to recurring Brahmaputra river floods and increasing anthropogenic pressures from villages within the park’s boundaries.

• The native “grassland invaders” are Bombax ceiba and Lagerstroemia speciosa, flowering trees known as Simalu and Ajar in Assamese.

• The study, published in the latest issue of Earth, analyzes the land use and land cover (LULC) changes in DSNP from 1999 to 2024.

• The study found that grasslands covered 28.78% of the 425 sq. km DSNP in 2000, followed by semi-evergreen forests (25.58%). By 2013, shrubland became the most prominent class, and degraded forest expanded to 75.56 sq. km.

• The study recommends a targeted grassland recovery project that includes control of invasive species, improved surveillance, increased staffing, and the relocation of forest villages.
