Supreme Court Order on Aadhaar’s Validity for Bihar’s Electoral Roll

• The Election Commission of India (EC) Form 6 requires applicants’ Aadhaar details for authentication of entries.

• The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voters’ list in Bihar excluded Aadhaar, a common proof of identity in India, from the list of 11 documents for inclusion into the final electoral roll.

• The Supreme Court ordered the EC to include Aadhaar in the list, correcting an approach that was becoming exclusionary.

• The EC’s credibility is built on the principle that no citizen, rich or poor, will be denied the right to vote.

• The SIR in Bihar rushed the process, focusing on the corollary rather than the fundamental principle.

• The Court mandated the inclusion of Aadhaar, a biometrically verified document, to ease the burden of “proving” voters’ eligibility.

• The EC has suggested that Aadhaar be included in the list of accepted documents for the exercise.

• The EC has had few blemishes on its record, and it should live up to this nudge from the judiciary.
