Supreme Court Orders Aadhaar as 12th Document for Voter Verification

• The Supreme Court of India has ordered the Election Commission of India (ECI) to include Aadhaar as one of the 12 valid documents for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar’s electoral rolls.

• The decision is a significant victory for the fundamental right to vote, reaffirming the principle that procedural rigidity should not disenfranchise lakhs of eligible citizens.

• The ECI’s argument that Aadhaar was proof of residency, not citizenship, was dismantled by the Court, pointing out the inconsistency of the other 11 documents.

• The Court also stated that Aadhaar could be used subject to verification of its authenticity.

• The inclusion of Aadhaar paves the way for a smoother, more accessible verification process, offering a lifeline to those unfairly struck off the rolls and assists electors already on the rolls who require document verification.

• The ruling has implications beyond Bihar, setting a precedent for all other revisions across India.
