Supreme Court Orders Aadhaar as Identity Proof for Bihar Electoral Rolls

• The Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission (EC) to include Aadhaar as the 12th “indicative” document for voters seeking inclusion or exclusion of names on Bihar’s electoral rolls.

• Aadhaar will be used as proof of identity, not as evidence of Indian citizenship.

• EC officials are allowed to verify the authenticity of the Aadhaar submitted, similar to other 11 documents.

• The court ordered the EC to issue instructions to officials, from Electoral Registration Officers to booth-level officers, to accept Aadhaar from those filing claims or objections.

• Approximately 65 lakh voters were excluded from the draft rolls published on August 1.

• The deadline for filing claims and objections to exclude names was September 1, but the EC clarified that these are welcome even beyond the deadline.
