Supreme Court Relaxes Firecracker Ban in Delhi

• The Supreme Court relaxed the blanket ban on firecrackers in Delhi and the National Capital Region.

• Green firecrackers approved by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) and the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) are allowed to be sold from October 18 to 20.

• The use of these firecrackers is restricted to October 19 and 20, between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m., and 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.

• The relaxation is a “test case” to examine the coexistence of a regulated framework with efforts to mitigate air pollution.
