Supreme Court Reserves Order on Stray Dog Removal in Delhi-NCR

• The Supreme Court has reserved its order on an interim petition against the removal of stray dogs from Delhi-NCR streets.

• The court criticized local authorities for not taking responsibility for the issue.

• The court declined to grant a stay on the directions issued to civic bodies by a Division Bench of Justices J.B. Pardiwala and R. Mahadevan.

• Advocates for the Centre and an NGO arguing for the stay argue that the directives contravene the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023, which prohibit relocation of strays from their original habitation.

• The court also noted that Delhi recorded 25,201 dog-bite cases in 2024, and that the directives were issued in the larger public interest.

• The directives sparked widespread outrage among animal rights activists, public figures, and welfare organizations, who argued that the region lacked sufficient facilities to accommodate an estimated eight lakh stray dogs.
